As a pet owner/dog lover, it sometimes seems as though we have an irrational attachment to our pets. I know that when I'm away from my dog for more than a few days I start to really miss her. In fact when we were recently in Mexico for about a week and a half I started to make plans to bring her the next time I go there!
But really what I want to talk about is something that is of critical importance to all of us dog owners, and that is keeping our pet safe in our yards, Sensor swab even if we don't have a fence.
A few years ago we had a house in the suburbs with a large back yard. The only problem was, the fence along one side of the yard was old when we bought the house and soon had to be torn down as there was lots of rot.
Since the yard opened onto a small park, we really liked not having a fence. It really opened the space up, allowed more light in, and gave the yard an expansive feel. Unfortunately we also had a dog. He was a large breed who loved everyone and wanted to greet everyone who walked by in the park! This was clearly not acceptable.
We debated the pros and cons of building a new fence even though we really liked not having one there any more.
Finally a friend suggested we consider one of the new "invisible" dog fences.
It sounded like a great idea so we checked it out.
At first we thought the idea of giving our dog a "shock" was cruel so we were not too keen about the idea.
But then we looked into it more closely. We also found a few people in the area who had installed them to see what they thought and to our surprise we heard mostly really good things.
Most important was to learn that the "shock" the dog receives is very mild and is mostly only felt during the first few days of training. Once your pet learns her boundaries, she rarely gets to that point. Plus there is an audible warning so she can correct her action if she starts to approach the "danger" point.
So we decided that this would be a better option for us. It would allow us to keep the openness that we had come to love while at the same time providing the boundary for our dog to keep her from greeting everybody and every dog that went by!
We found the instructions for setting up the system to be very clear. In addition, the training instructions gave us the tools to quickly train our pet to understand her new limits. There was even a DVD to show us exactly how to set it up and do the training. It only took a few days before she very clearly understood exactly how far she could venture towards the edge of the yard.
After that there was never a problem with her running out to greet the neighborhood!
